How it works
Do three things once, then never again

Scan the card
Hold the barcode up. Stapel recognises the chain, picks the right colour and the right card format, and fills in the name.

Walk into the shop
Your phone works out that you are there. No server knows it, because the calculation happens on the device.

Show your phone
The widget has become the card. Tapping opens it full screen at full brightness, and that is what the till can scan.
The privacy promise, exactly
Two network requests. That is all there are, and neither is silent.
“No network traffic” would be a lie, so we do not say it. Your card data is not among these in any case: it never leaves the device.
On by default — one switch turns it off
Update the store list
At most once a month, and only on unmetered wifi.

Look up an address
Only for a store you pin yourself. One lookup, and it is never required.

The idea comes from Bijdehand, Misha Scholte’s iPhone app, which already does this well. We just sat here looking at it enviously. Android had nothing comparable, and that is what Stapel is for.

Catima is good, and has been good for years. The difference is Dutch depth: the chains, their colours, their card formats, and the store locations that make arrival detection possible at all.
Store data
We publish what is wrong with it too
The store database comes from OpenStreetMap and is measured, not estimated. Lidl is complete bar one store; Etos is missing about 29; for 115 stores we have nothing but coordinates. And nothing in this system notices that a store has closed.
Stapel is open source and built in the open.
Build along, suggest a chain, or just tell us something is wrong — all three are equally welcome.
